#Event: Registration Now Open for Sustainable Conversations VIII!

ThistlePraxis Consulting in partnership with IHS Towers, invites all stakeholders to the eight edition of its breakfast series, Sustainable ConversationsTM  , themed: ‘Mini-grids: Bridging the Electricity Gap through Renewables.’

According to the World Economic Outlook 2016, an estimated 1.2 billion people – 16% of the global population – did not have access to electricity whilst many more suffer from supply that is of poor quality and inconsistent. More than 95% of these people are found in Sub-Saharan African countries and developing Asia, and they are predominantly in rural areas (around 80% of the world total).

Also, Global Legal Insight in the fifth edition of Energy 2017 report that as of July 2016, 85% of total installed power generation capacity in Nigeria was gas-fired (thermal) and 15% hydro-generated whilst output was 2,567 MWh/hour. On May 6, 2018, output which had earlier risen to 5,222.3 megawatts (MW) at the beginning of the year dropped to 2,329.9 MW. In total, average generation in the country is only about 4,000 MW, a generation obviously insufficient to meet the energy needs of its over 187 million inhabitants. Over 20 million households are currently without power whilst current access rate is 45% – Rural: 36% Urban: 55% (USAID Power Africa Sheet 2018).

This 8th edition of Sustainable Conversations (SCVIII) will therefore seek to highlight the gaps within the renewable energy sector, unravel the obstacles to private sector investments in mini-grids, as well as address the concerns of the civil society in taking advantage of renewable sources of energy. Ultimately, Sustainable Conversations 8.0, will consider the roles stakeholders can play in establishing a firm renewable energy mix in order that access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy is available to every Nigerian come 2030.

Finally, SCVIII will draw up a feasible line of action that can ensure that significant and sustainable change is recorded in the renewable energy/mini-grid organs of the energy sector.
