World Book and Copyright Day, also known as International Day of the Book, is an annual event marked on the 23rd of April. World Book Day was celebrated for the first time in 1995. The choice of 23rd of April is symbolic in the literature world as it is the date in which prominent authors; William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died.
It is organized by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing and copyright and to pay world-wide tribute to books and authors at the same time encouraging everyone to access books. Every year, a major celebration event takes place at UNESCO Headquarters, with booksellers, publishing companies and artists invited to share their passion for books and reading by conducting practical workshops for young participants.
As part of activities to commemorate the 2018 World Book Day, leading telecommunications services provider, Airtel Nigeria, will hold reading sessions across public primary schools in the country. The firm is set to donate about 5,000 books to public primary school pupils across different locations in the country.
