Following the 2nd year commemoration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals on September 25, 2017, Kaduna State presented its SDG Report at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
Commended by the UN as the one of the first subnational governments in the world to conduct an in-depth analysis of local SDGs data and strategy development to implement all 17 Goals in the State; the report depicts how the Kaduna State Government is implementing the SDGs with the aim of improving the standard of living of its citizens.
The 134-page document narrates the state’s journey towards Sustainable Development and its transition from the MDGs to the SDGs albeit peculiar challenges like availability of data, corruption, political conflict and institutional decay. It also reflects the opportunities Kaduna State will maximise in order to meet the SDGs.
Whilst the state’s adoption of all 17 of the UNSDGs may be called to question considering the attendant challenges, Kaduna State has been able to manage its deficits via key partnerships with the state’s budget and planning commission, the National Bureau of Statistics and others; to ensure significant investments in the state statistical system, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation.
With data at the core of its strategy towards achieving inclusive economic growth and socio-economic transformation that translates into substantial improvements in the quality of lives of its citizens; the report gives a step-by-step breakdown of the 17 goals with indicators of what has been achieved so far, and proposed key actions to increase data availability for accurate reporting.
The report also makes reference to the Kaduna State Development Plan 2016-2020 and how it has imbibed the Sustainable Development Goals, specifying concentrated policy actions to help achieve each goal. Nonetheless, with new statistical systems still being integrated, the State is yet to assess trends or progress towards the SDGs due to new data frameworks put in place by the State Government.
An in-depth and strategic report towards achieving the targets of each SDG goal; the document clearly outlines its action plan in achieving the SDGs by embracing a framework of responsibility, accountability, gender equality and partnerships to achieve its agenda 2020.
