InPrint: Wheels of Hope Rising Foundation: Annual Report 2015

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been actively involved in pushing for Sustainable Development at the international level especially since the Sustainable Goals were officially adopted January 1, 2016. Activist groups have also been key drivers of inter-governmental parleys, ranging from the regulation of hazardous wastes to a global ban on land mines and the elimination of slavery.

For the Wheels of Hope Rising Foundation (WHRF), the adoption of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a beacon of hope for many that lives will be saved and the quality of lives improved in developing countries especially those on the African continent.

This report details how the non-profit, non-governmental organization, has aided in transforming lives, especially in the rural communities in Nigeria, with the SDGs in view and against the back-drop of a powerful mission statement: ‘to give hope to the Hopeless, Happiness to the Crying, Shoes to the shoeless, Hand to the handless and Voice to the Voiceless.’

Highlighting some of its projects, the report states how WHRF has been able to harness organizational transformation to better address the problems that the hopeless and underprivileged people living in the rural areas of Africa face.

The report also shows a financial statement for the year 2015, reflecting transparency and accountability which are core business principles and ethics for a more sustainable practice. It is also in line with USAID’s “Transparency and Accountability as Shared Goal,” principle in its NGO Reporting Guidelines.

Like many African non-profit organizations, WHRF has had to operate without the benefit of large donations or government grants. Rather, the organization has endured with the help of volunteerism and pro-bono support and is committed to taking the leap forward towards more sustainable and robust revenue models.

Although a commendable report, yet the report reflects the need for more Governmental and Corporate partnerships with NGOs in order to have a wider reach, impact in their societies, and jointly achieve the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals: ‘Leave No One Behind.’
