#IWD2016: PLANET 50-50 BY 2030

The United Nations (UN) theme for the International Women’s Day celebration was ‘Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it up for Gender Equality’. This theme is a pathway for building momentum for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The official UN commemoration took place in the Trusteeship Council between 10 am and 12:45pm yesterday, with activities including musical performances and two panel discussions.

The UN Secretary-General said that it is a time to sweep away the assumptions and bias of the past to help women advance across new frontiers in the fulfilment of the SDGs. The UN Women Executive Director also said that everyone is needed, to ensure that decisive, visible and measurable actions are taken under the banner of ‘Planet 50-50: Step it up for Gender Equality’.
