The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, has announced the choice of Patricia Espinosa, a veteran Mexican diplomat, as the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Patricia Espinosa is a former foreign minister and the present Mexican ambassador to Germany. She will be replacing Christiana Figueres.
The UNFCC has the mandate to slash carbon emission and help poor countries to cope with the impacts of climate change. The appointment is said to be coming at a time when the focus of the UNFCCC is moving from setting policies to acting on the policies.
