The 7th of April 2018 is the World Health Day and the theme for this year is Universal Health Coverage: Everyone Everywhere. Universal health coverage is about ensuring everyone can get quality health services, anytime and anywhere, without suffering financial hardship. The aim is for no citizen to have to choose between good health and other life necessities.
At least half of the world’s population is currently unable to obtain essential health services. Almost a 100 million people are indirectly pushed into extreme poverty because they have to pay for health services out of their own pockets. Over 800 million people spend at least 10 percent of their household budgets on health expenses for themselves or a family member.
Achieving Universal Health Coverage is possible. Some countries have made steps towards achieving it. For example, the United States of America makes use of the Medicaid programme for which about 13% of Americans receive healthcare through, this includes the elderly population and younger people with disabilities.
It is also important to note that corporations and business owners have a role to play in ensuring every member of their staff have some form of health insurance coverage. Most corporations in Nigeria make use of the HMOs.
